COMPETENCIAS

Generales
CG6 - Ser capaz de realizar trabajos académicos (informes y ensayos) en los que se plasme su iniciación en la investigación en el ámbito de la lingüística inglesa.
CG8 - Utilizar herramientas informáticas y sus aplicaciones en el campo de la investigación en lingüística, la enseñanza-aprendizaje y la comunicación intercultural.
CB6 - Poseer y comprender conocimientos que aporten una base u oportunidad de ser originales en el desarrollo y/o aplicación de ideas, a menudo en un contexto de investigación
CG2 - Conocer las metodologías para la investigación lingüística en lengua inglesa.
CG4 - Conocer los aspectos interculturales que inciden en la comunicación internacional y la traducción.
CG5 - Comprender e integrar información masiva y compleja procedente de diversas fuentes (artículos, Internet, revistas especializadas, etc.) dentro de distintas perspectivas teóricas de la

CE6 - Aplicar las herramientas proporcionadas por las diversas teorías lingüísticas en el análisis en profundidad de textos en lengua inglesa, tanto a nivel oral como escrito.

Breve descriptor:


This course introduces students to theoretical and practical research skills in English Linguistics. This includes both theoretical knowledge of basic research methods, designs and tools, as well as the practical ability to undertake research projects using those methods and tools. At the end of the course, students will have the knowledge of scientific methodologies and tools related to English linguistics necessary for more advanced postgraduate studies.

Esta asignatura introduce al estudiantado en las competencias teóricas y prácticas de investigación en Lingüística Inglesa. Esto incluye tanto el conocimiento teórico de los métodos, diseños y herramientas básicas de investigación como la capacidad práctica para llevar a cabo proyectos de investigación utilizando dichos métodos y herramientas. Al finalizar la asignatura, el alumnado habrá adquirido los conocimientos sobre metodologías y herramientas científicas aplicadas a la Lingüística Inglesa necesarios para abordar estudios de posgrado más avanzados.

Objetivos

- To introduce students to the basic methods and tools for undertaking linguistic research in their area of interest.
- To provide students with practical experience in undertaking a short research project.
- To familiarise students with the use of computer analysis tools and technologies, their potential and limitations for linguistic research.


- Intoducir al alumnado en los métodos y herramientas básicos para la realización de investigaciones lingüísticas en su área de interés.
- Proporcionar al alumnado experiencia práctica en el desarrollo de un proyecto de investigación de pequeña escala.
- Familiarizar al alumnado con el uso de herramientas y tecnologías informáticas de análisis, así como con sus posibilidades y limitaciones para la investigación lingüística.

 

Contenido


1.1.INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH: Science and research. Research questions in science and linguistics. Operationalizing research questions. Implications for data, data collection and analysis. Overview of areas of study in English linguistics.

1.2. RESEARCH ETHICS. Informed consent. Institutional Review Boards / Ethics Committees.

2. TYPES OF RESEARCH METHODS: Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed method designs.

3.1. QUANTITATIVE METHODS. Key concepts: sampling, variable, hypothesis, theory, reliability, validity, etc. Research designs: longitudinal, cross-sectional, experimental, quasi-experimental. Techniques and instruments. Questionnaire design.

3.2. QUANTITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS. Key statistical concepts. Descriptive statistics. Basic statistical procedures and tests. Presenting quantitative data.

4.1. QUALITATIVE METHODS. Sampling in qualitative research. Ethnography. Interviews. Focus group interviews. Introspective methods. Case studies.

4.2. QUALITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS. Qualitative content analysis. Grounded theory. Computer-aided analysis. Presenting qualitative data.

5. CORPUS METHODS IN LINGUISTICS. Key concepts and issues. Types of corpora. Main corpora for research in English linguistics.
